Solly’s Grill

Solly’s Grill

Solly’s Grill is a casual diner-style restaurant located just north of the city in Glendale and has been serving up food since 1936. While the restaurant serves up its fair share of breakfast classics, sandwiches, and malts, the real reason to visit Solly’s is for their unmatched version of the butter burger. Grab a seat at the diner and order one of the numerous burger options, and be sure to specify whether you want regular or a lighter amount of butter. Either way, prepare yourself for one of the most delicious and butter-heavy burgers you have ever experienced. While the fries are great, the onion rings are also some of the best in the city. For one of the best butter burgers, you will ever encounter, be sure to head north of Milwaukee to stop at Solly’s Grill.

Solly’s first opened as a coffee shop in 1936. Since then, this family-owned restaurant has been slinging up breakfast items, homemade pies, ice cream shakes, and some of the best butter burgers in the area. The restaurant has even been featured on a few national television shows. Check out Solly’s for one of the best bites of history in the Milwaukee area.

The Neighborhood

Located in Glendale about ten minutes north of downtown, Solly’s is surrounded mostly by businesses. However, the restaurant is located a few minutes’ drive from the Estabrook beer garden, Bayshore Mall, and a couple of breweries, Sprecher Brewing and the Bavarian Bierhaus.

The Food

Solly’s is a one stop destination for staple Wisconsin dishes, including butter burgers, custard, and Friday fish fry. Above everything else, Solly’s is famous for its extremely rich and satisfying butter burger – trust us, they don’t skimp on the butter. Try the Original Solly Burger that comes with a sirloin patty, Wisconsin butter, and stewed onions ($4.89, $4.99 with cheese). For something even more decadent, try the Cheesehead Burger, which comes with a 2/3-pound sirloin patty, grilled mushrooms, stewed and raw onions, swiss and American cheeses.

You can always build your own burger as well. Specify how many sirloin patties, how much butter, and then get creative with the toppings by choosing from an assortment of cheeses, onions, bacon, or jalapenos. While the fries are delicious (small $3.49, large $5.19), the onion rings pair perfectly with the rich burger ($3.69).

Solly’s also offers other dining options. Breakfast foods are available, including scramblers, pancakes, and French toast, or for dinner, the Friday fish fry is delicious, which comes with fries or potato pancakes, rye bread, and a side of apple sauce ($12.99).

Was the original restaurant on green bay avenue Milwaukee ?I had lunch there in the early 1940s. I went to Victor Berger school about 2 blocks away. Watched the cook (Sully) slap the butter on. Russ
